Each creator uses techniques from the programme Contemporary music through non-western techniques in his or her own way, mixed with their own style and/or aesthetics. Each piece is therefore completely different from another and quite unique.

In the seminars on 28 and 29 November, Dr. Mysore Manjunath (violin) and B.C. Manjunath (percussion) explained key principles of Karnatic music as well as concepts, phrases and talas that they used in their concert on the 29 November. They also proposed practical exercises for the students.

The first part of the double-bill concert featured pieces of the programme Contemporary music through non-western techniques, created and performed by students. In the second part the two Karnatic musicians performed new pieces using constant crossing accents, polyrhythms and polypulses. Unusual and complex talas were the trademark of the concert.

Today the Conservatorium van Amsterdam launches CvA Online, with a variety of interactive online courses. These include the Advanced Rhythm courses for classical musicians and improvisers that I teach at the CvA together with Jos Zwaanenburg, David de Marez Oyens and Jonas Bisquert. We enjoyed numerous recording sessions, including on the hottest day last summer. Great to see it all come together and finally online!

The Conservatorium van Amsterdam and I would like to invite you to the launching of the book ‘Applying Karnatic Rhythmical Techniques to Western Music’ that will take place on 27th March at 17.30 in the Amsterdam Blue Note, at the Conservatory. It will feature a special concert with compositions written by myself and advanced students of the programme ‘Contemporary Music through Non-Western Techniques’.

This book is the result of over 21 years of research into Karnatic rhythmical principles and its applications to western music, plus 18 years teaching and composing with this material.

The book will shortly be published by the Anglo-American company Ashgate Publishing, based on the PhD thesis that I completed through Brunel University, London, in November 2013. Find out more about the book on Ashgate’s website.

Closing the so-called 'promotievoucher' awarded by the Conservatoire and the AHK (Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunst) there will be a symposium and double concert further to completion of the PhD 'Karnatic Rhythmical Structures as a Source for New Thinking in Western Music'.

There will be a full day of presentations and discussions chaired by Michiel Schuijer (AHK), culminating in a round table, and double evening concert.  
Symposium speakers are fellow teachers of the programme 'Contemporary Music through Non-Western Techniques', David de Marez Oyens, and Jos Zwaanenburg; Peter Wiegold (University of Brunel); and special guest Miles Okazaki (New York). B.C. Manjunath (mrindangam) and Dr. Mysore Manjunath (violin) lead a Karnatic seminar.  
After a concert with pieces written and performed by advanced students of the programme 'Contemporary Music through Non-Western Techniques', Dr. Mysore Manjunath and B.C. Manjunath will close the evening with a concert of Karnatic music. Find out more
