Master classes
With a background in jazz, having specialized in contemporary classical music and with an extensive knowledge of many music cultures and their translation for western purposes, Reina has given Master classes in numerous countries, including Spain, the UK, Germany, Norway, Estonia and India.
Expertise Reina's particular expertise lies in increasing the understanding and accuracy of contemporary music and broadening musicians’ creative possibilities in both composition and improvisation, through the teaching of rhythmical complexity and microtonality. Reina's jazz background - he initially started out as a jazz musician playing electric base before switching to composition at Berklee College of Music, Boston - means he has an exceptional understanding of all music genres. Furthermore, Reina has a broad knowledge of many musical cultures, especially South Indian, but also African (an interest derived from his childhood years in Equatorial Guinea, a former Spanish colony), Flamenco (being Spanish), Berber music (having spent time with berber tribes in the Moroccan Sahara) and Persian music (having travelled to Iran). Reina is particularly skilled in translating this knowledge for western purposes and methods of working. He has taught and is expert in the following fields: • Contemporary composition and orchestration. • Contemporary techniques in composition. • Principles of North Indian, African, Flamenco and Arab music. • Advanced harmonic concepts; arranging concepts and techniques for jazz musicians. • Rhythm for performers.
